Public Heath England (PHE) is raising awareness of an emerging problem with Staphylococcus capitis in neonatal units.

This is a coagulase negative staph, so may get ignored as a skin contaminant. However it is associated with adverse outcomes in neonates.

The attached briefing note (attached) describes the issues and advises on some of the steps needed for NHS colleagues.

PHE is investigating further and would welcome support from neonatal colleagues. A S. capitis Task and Finish group has been established and they are seeking members from neonatal networks.
