The content of this report has utilised the data received from BAPM's workforce surveys of neonatal consultants. This UK survey followed pilot testing ran in May and June 2022 with results presented at a BAPM webinar in December 2022.

The data received from responding consultants along with additional stakeholder input was used to develop seven key recommendations covering:

  • Workforce planning
  • Clinical service commitment
  • Well-being
  • Career progression
  • Job planning
  • Rotation of staff
  • Learning from deaths and incidents

While the essence of the report seeks to improve the working lives and increase retention of consultants in neonatology, there are inevitable overlaps with other perinatal staff groups as well as existing national reports.
