Towards an individualised understanding of brain and cognitive development in babies with Congenital Heart Disease

Dr Alexandra Bonthrone is a neuroscientist at the University of Edinburgh. She completed her PhD at the UCL Great Ormond Street Institute of Child Health before taking up a post in Prof Serena Counsell’s group at the Centre for the Developing Brain, King’s College London. 

In 2026 she moved to Prof James Boardman’s team at the University of Edinburgh. Her research is dedicated to characterising brain development from infancy to childhood, investigating the influence of clinical and environmental and resilience factors, and understanding how these processes influence cognitive and behavioural outcomes in childhood and beyond.
