Neonatal Palliative and End of Life Care: a simulation-based course

Suitable for: Paediatric and Neonatal Consultants and Trainees (ST6+), Advanced Neonatal Nurse Practitioners and Senior Neonatal Nursing or Bereavement Champions.

Tailoring individualised care to the needs of critically unwell infants and their families involves detailed knowledge of palliative and end of life care provision. This aspect of care is complex and nuanced and can be intimidating for healthcare professionals. However, it is a vital component of comprehensive neonatal intensive care.

This course has been developed for Neonatal and Paediatric Consultants, senior Paediatric trainees (ST6+) and experienced Neonatal Nursing staff to allow an immersive experience of neonatal palliative and end of life care through a mixture of lectures, discussions and small group simulations.

Topics covered include: antenatal counselling for terminal conditions, acute deterioration and death; decision making at the cusps of viability, application of parallel planning and advanced care planning concepts and follow-up after bereavement.

Date: 25th - 26th April 2024
Venue: 2 day face-to-face (socially distanced) course at Whiston Simulation Suite, Education Centre, Whiston Hospital.
