The National Confidential Enquiry into Patient Outcome and Death (NCEPOD) is recruiting case note reviewers for a new national study examining the care of preterm babies who develop necrotising enterocolitis (NEC).
The study aims to improve the quality of acute care provided to babies born before 32 weeks' gestation who develop NEC. To support this work, NCEPOD is seeking a multidisciplinary group of healthcare professionals with experience in the care of this patient group.
Case reviewers will assess anonymised case note extracts and provide expert opinion on the care received by a sample of babies with NEC. The findings from these reviews will form a significant part of the study's final report.
NCEPOD is inviting applications from clinicians currently in practice and working at ST6 level or equivalent and above. Applications are welcomed from a wide range of specialties, including:
- Neonatologists
- Paediatric surgeons
- Paediatricians
- Paediatric critical care clinicians
- Anaesthetists, including those with regular paediatric sessions
- Neonatal nurses
- Advanced neonatal nurse practitioners
- Neonatal transport team members
- Neonatal dietitians
A training day is planned for 26 November 2026, although alternative training arrangements may be available for those unable to attend. Reviewers will typically be expected to participate in at least four case review meetings, including one held at the NCEPOD offices in London, with the remainder taking place online. The review process is expected to run over a period of approximately six to eight months. Travel expenses will be reimbursed.
