The Independent Investigation into maternity and neonatal services in East Kent has published its report on 19th October 2022. The investigation team was led by Dr Bill Kirkup CBE.

The report identifies four main areas for action:

  • Improving ways of identifying poorly performing units
  • Giving care with compassion and kindness
  • Teamworking with a common purpose
  • Responding to challenge with honesty

“This Report must be a catalyst for tackling these embedded, deep-rooted problems.”

Dr Bill Kirkup

The British Association of Perinatal Medicine (BAPM) would like to express our deepest condolences to the families involved. We encourage any families affected by the issues raised in the report to contact Bliss Charity at [email protected].

We will be taking time to consider how, as an organisation, we can best support the delivery of the recommendations in the report. BAPM had already identified perinatal team working as an area for improvement and a draft resource ‘Building Successful Perinatal Teams’ is currently out for consultation.
