Karena Ghaus - April 25th, 1958 - April 25th, 2020

Dr Karena Ghaus was a Consultant in Neonatal Medicine at St Mary’s Hospital Paddington and Chelsea and Westminster NHS Foundation Trust.

Karena passed away on her birthday on the 25th April 2020, at 62, following a long battle with invasive breast cancer. She was at home, surrounded by her family. The COVID-19 pandemic meant her family held her funeral virtually but her many friends, colleagues and relatives came together on-line to remember her and mourn her passing.

Karena qualified in 1983 at the University of Malaya. Her first job as a consultant after paediatric training in Malaysia and in the UK was at Mayday Hospital in 1996. From 1998 to 2010, she worked at the Donald Winnicott Baby Unit at St Mary’s Hospital, where she was clinical lead for 7 years, and then moved to Chelsea & Westminster as a researcher and locum consultant.

Karena contributed to the work of many organisations, too many to mention here, but one of which was BAPM. She was always effective and filled with enthusiasm. She never gave up, even when fate dealt the hardest blows. She was a strong woman with a great smile, focused and assertive as a manager, and tender and devoted as a doctor to babies and families. She will be greatly missed. Karena leaves behind her loving husband Fergus, and her beloved son Leo.
